“And I say also unto thee; that thou art Peter and upon this rock I will build my church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” Matthew 16:18
In the year of 1964, on the 24th day of February, a group of saints met in a house and organized a church under the leadership of Elder W. R. Dixon. Later on… land was purchased on Troy Street, and a small church was built and given a name, “Troy Street Sanctified Church”. However, the church services were still being held in a house located on Wilson Street in Huffsmith, TX.
Well not long after the church was organized, Elder Dixon left the small congregation, and the church was without a pastor for a while.
So, in 1965, Deacon Woods invited a young preacher to come – that preacher was Elder Burah Gatlin, Jr.; and in 1966 on the 14th day of August, Elder Burah Gatlin, Jr. became the pastor of the now titled, Troy Street Church of God in Christ, and immediately began to work on the church — finishing the inside of the building.
In 1967 the Lord smiled on us when Pastor Gatlin said to Deacon Woods, that they could build the much-needed pews themselves. So, the church gave the pastor the money to purchase the materials and the first pews for the church were built. And in that same year, that small-dedicated congregation and their new pastor were able to move from the little house on Wilson St. into the church building where we are today. This was truly a blessing from God. There were many souls saved and joyful days for many years.
After which, In April of 2016 tragedy struck when a large tree fell behind the church and caused a great deal of damage to the church, so much that the congregation was force to move out until repairs were made. The congregation of Pilgrim Hill Baptist Church was able to let us use their church to have services.
In July of 2016 the Troy Street Family hearts were sadden at the loss of our pastor Superintendent Burah Gatlin Jr. These were some dark days but the sun would shine again. After the passing of our pastor the jurisdictional prelate Bishop Samuel Edward Iglehart filled in as the pastor while the membership heals from the loss of their great leader. In December 2016 the Troy St. family returned back home, after the repairs to the church was completed under the leadership of Bishop S.E. Iglehart.
On January 5, 2018 the Lord blessed Troy Street Church of God in Christ with a permanent pastor in Elder Courtnay Ramon White. Under the new leadership the church membership have grew and many souls have been saved. The members are excited about their new pastor and first lady.
